Just remember these 5 flourishing spots.
In my previous post, I talked about some mistakes I’ve seen on where to flourish e.g. off the top of letters c and g.
If you’re ever confused about where exactly to flourish in a lowercase letter, just remember these five fail-proof spots (which already gives plenty of opportunities to flourish!).
✔️ Crossbar of letter t
✔️ Descender loop
✔️ Ascender loop
✔️ Exit stroke
✔️ Entrance stroke
I go through these five spots and variations for each in my free Basics of Flourishing guide, which is great if you are completely new to flourishing! Link to download in my bio.

If your flourishes look like these…
You may think that flourishes are simply extensions of a letter’s strokes.
You’re not entirely wrong.
But there’s a rhyme and reason behind how to extend the strokes.
A very quick fix is to flourish using ovals — every single flourish can be broken down into ovals.

Iro-Utsushi & Iroshizuku review 🌸
I came across the Pilot Iro-Utsushi dip fountain pen a long time back, and I wondered how it would fit into a calligrapher or stationery lover’s rotation of pens. So thank you @pilotpensg for giving me the chance to test out this pen.
My initial impressions were correct — think of it as a hybrid between a fountain pen and a glass dip pen.
Compared to a glass dip pen, the Iro-Utsushi holds less ink but it’s finer (I have the fine nib). It’s also significantly lighter than a glass dip pen or a fountain pen, which makes writing much more comfortable. Another major plus point for me — it’s very easy to clean; I’m not very diligent about cleaning the grooves of my glass dip pen. 😬
Compared to a fountain pen, it (obviously) doesn’t have an ink reservoir so it’s a little cumbersome to write long texts. But it’s convenient if you want to switch or mix inks along the way.
I also did a quick test of how much ink it holds. In the last photo, you can see how a pointed pen nib lasts about one line, the Iro-Utsushi about two lines, and a glass pen more than 4 lines.
I would use the Iro-Utsushi to swatch and play with inks — so easy to use and clean along the way. I would also use it for greeting cards and envelopes if I want a monoline script. I still remember how I used a glass pen with sumi ink sometime back and I nearly cried when cleaning it. 😛
With all that said about the Iro-Utsushi, let’s talk about the Iroshizuku inks.
I have a soft spot for the Pilot Iroshizuku inks because they’re the first two bottles of ink that I had and finished — Yama-budo and Kiri-same.
And there’s nothing bad to say about these inks! Kon-peki is a deep cerulean blue and Sui-gyoku is an emerald green. Both gorgeous inks in classic blue and green.
